MONUMENT TO HONOR BLESSED BASIL MOREAU
A monument was erected in Saint-Laurent, Montréal, Québec, on the very site of the first Holy Cross foundation in Canada (1847)to honor the beatification of our Founder, Blessed Basil Moreau. It was installed between two streets named for the Congregation: Boulevard Sainte-Croix and rue Basile-Moreau and near the General Administration building of the Sisters of Holy Cross, initiators of this event. The inauguration was held on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at the parish of Saint-Laurent, beginning with the Eucharist of thanksgiving, which was presided by Fr. Pierre Dufour, parish priest and Fr. Gilles Sauvé, provincial of the Canadian priests. Following this was the blessing of the monument and a “vin d’amitié” (reception) held at the parish hall. Sister Kesta Occident, congregational animator of the Sisters of Holy Cross and Mr. de Souza, mayor of Saint Laurent, unveiled the monument together. In attendance were many members of the Holy Cross Family and friends.
The monument, seven feet in height and made of one sole piece of black granite brought from India, was sculpted in Québec. A committee of our sisters, all artists in their own right, created the design which was then sketched by Sister Trinh Ta for the sculptors to use as their model.
The monument reads (in French):
Blessed Basile Moreau
Founder of the religious of Holy Cross
with the following quote from Scriptures engraved at the base:
“Consider the rock from which you were hewn…”
Isaiah 51,1
